Frequently asked questions about orthodontic treatment with Invisalign trays

Q: Is orthodontic treatment painful?

A: Most people will feel some pain in their teeth for the first few days after wearing the new aligners.

This is normal. It is a sign that the Invisalign aligners are moving your teeth. This numbness will gradually disappear, at the latest after 1 week.

If the pain is increasing or the pain is severe, tell your doctor.

Q: Will wearing Invisalign trays affect pronunciation when communicating

A: Like all orthodontic treatments, Invisalign aligners can temporarily affect your pronunciation and cause discomfort.

However, after only a few days, when the lips and tongue get used to the “foreign object” in the mouth, everything will return to normal.

Q: What should I do if the aligner tray does not fit snugly against my teeth?

A: When you change to a new tray, a small gap (<0.5mm) between the teeth and the tray is normal, as it takes time for the teeth to move into the new tray.

In case this gap is getting bigger (>1mm), inform your doctor for instructions on how to manage.

Q: Will wearing Invisalign aligners affect my diet?

A: Unlike traditional orthodontics with brackets, your diet will not be affected.

One thing to keep in mind is that brushing and flossing clean all the interdental spaces before wearing the tray.

Because the time to wear the tray is 20-22 hours / day, the food when it is sealed will easily ferment, produce odors and cause tooth decay.

Q: Can I drink hot/cold drinks while wearing the tray?

A: Avoid drinking too hot water because it can make the tray lose its elasticity

You should drink cool water and limit colored, sugary water because it is easy to cause stains, as well as cause tooth decay.

In addition, smoking also causes trays and teeth to quickly stain.

Q: Can I chew gum while wearing the tray?

A: Not recommended, as the gum will stick to the tray and may even open the tray without your knowledge.

Q: What are those little white buttons stuck on the teeth? What if one of these buttons is dropped or broken?

A: Composite buttons (materials used in fillings) or “Attachments” are glued to the teeth with the function of supporting tooth movement more accurately for those teeth that are very misaligned.

In the event that this button comes off or breaks, you need to notify your doctor immediately.

Note: In rare cases, some patients may be allergic to the tray material.

In case of suspected tray allergy, discontinue use and notify your physician immediately.
