7 Common Oral Health Problems in Children and How to Prevent Them

Table of contents

Oral health is not only important for adults — it is especially crucial for children. In fact, a person’s smile reveals many things. A smile reflects personality and confidence, and a beautiful smile is largely shaped by proper oral care from an early age.

If you want your child to grow up with bright and healthy teeth, you should guide them on how to properly care for their oral health.

Below are some common dental problems in children and how to prevent them:

    Tooth Decay

This is probably the most common oral health problem in children. It is mainly caused by excessive consumption of carbohydrates and sugary foods combined with poor oral hygiene. Tooth decay occurs when food debris accumulates over time and bacteria form plaque and tartar. If left untreated, it can lead to weakening of the surrounding supporting structures (periodontium).

Fortunately, tooth decay in children can be prevented with proper oral hygiene. You should take your child to the dental clinic regularly every 4–6 months. Additionally, monitor and limit the amount of starch and sugary foods your child consumes daily.

    Periodontal Disease

Swollen and bleeding gums, also known as gingivitis, are also common in children. If not treated early, it can progress to more serious periodontal problems and may even require surgical intervention.

Observe your child carefully while they brush their teeth and schedule a dental visit if gum bleeding occurs. Periodontal disease can be prevented by maintaining good oral hygiene and attending regular dental check-ups every 4–6 months, especially during the transition to permanent teeth.

    Bad Breath

This is usually caused by plaque buildup and bacterial accumulation in the mouth. It can be prevented by brushing and flossing regularly.

    Mouth Ulcers

Common in both adults and children, these are small recurrent sores inside the mouth that usually last one to two weeks. To relieve symptoms and promote healing, alcohol-free antibacterial mouthwash may be used.

    Thumb Sucking

Although not an immediate problem, it may lead to serious issues in the future.

Thumb sucking is common in young children and considered normal under the age of 5. Beyond this age, the habit is considered abnormal and may cause misalignment during permanent tooth eruption.

Thumb sucking may also affect speech development due to jaw discrepancies (between the upper and lower jaws). Like most habits, it can be difficult to stop and may sometimes require orthodontic intervention with habit-breaking appliances.

Proper oral hygiene guidance is essential to ensure your child grows up with a healthy smile. Equally important is scheduling regular dental visits, especially at clinics specializing in orthodontics, particularly during the mixed dentition and permanent tooth eruption stages.
